AUTHORITATIVE
PARENTS :
-are warm, sensitive, nurturing and attentive
to their children.
--establish an enjoyable, emotionally fulfilling parent-child
relationship that draws the child into close connection.
-place and enforce reasonable demands and limits on their
children.
-exercise firm, reasonable control.
- insist on mature behavior and give reasons for their
expectations.
---offer their children a balanced approach that responds
to children’s needs, yet demands mature & responsible
behavior.
--listen compassionately to their child’s viewpoint,
but will make the final decision.
- base their decisions on what is appropriate for their
child, not what is popular.
-engage in gradual, appropriate autonomy granting, allowing
the child to make decisions in areas where he or she is
ready to make choices.
Throughout childhood
and adolescence, authoritative parenting is
linked to many aspects of competence, including
upbeat mood, self-control, task persistence, cooperativeness,
high self-esteem, social and moral maturity, and favorable
school performance.
